Types of Stinging Insects in Oregon

Did you know there are over 30,000 species of wasps across the globe?
Discover the common species you’ll spot buzzing around Oregon’s landscapes:
Yellowjackets (Vespula spp.):
These aggressive wasps are easily identified by their black and yellow striped bodies. They often nest in the ground but can also build nests in wall voids, attics, and other protected areas.
Paper Wasps
(Polistes spp.):
Paper wasps have brown, slender bodies and long legs. Unlike yellowjackets, paper wasps prefer to nest above ground, constructing upside-down contraptions near roof eaves and wall voids.
Bald-faced Hornets
(Dolichovespula maculata):
Despite their name, bald-faced hornets are actually a species of yellowjacket. These black and white pests have large, football-shaped nests, which they build in trees, shrubs, and buildings.
Mud Daubers
(Sphecidae family):
Mud daubers are solitary wasps that build mud nests along walls and corners of doors or porches. While beneficial for pest control, their nests are unsightly and quite messy.
Mud Daubers
(Sphecidae family):
This giant, solitary wasp hunts cicadas, paralyzing the insects for their growing larvae. While intimidating in appearance, cicada killers are not typically aggressive towards humans.

Caring for Wasp Stings

If you find yourself on the wrong end of a wasp’s stinger, here’s how to ease the pain and discomfort. First, gently wash the affected area with soap and water to remove any remaining venom and jumpstart the healing process. For quick relief against pain and swelling, apply a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the affected area.
For pain relief and inflammation, consider over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. While tempting, avoid scratching the stung area to prevent further irritation or infection. If you notice severe symptoms such as breathing difficulties, facial or throat swelling, or dizziness, seek immediate medical help.
